At a distance of 100 km from Hyderabad and 66 kms from Sangareddy, Medak is a municipal town in Medak district. Sangareddy is the administrative capital of Medak district.

Medak played important role in the history of Telangana, especially during Kakatiya's rule of Telugu land. It was ruled by several dynasties starting from Western Chalukyas, Chodas, Kakatiyas, Velama and Reddy dynasties before Qutb Shahis and Nizams constrolled the area. The original name of Medak was Siddapuram. Later, the name was changed to Gulshanabad, Methukuseema and finally settled to Medak.

Medak district has several tourist attractions like Medak Fort, Medak Cathedral (largest church in Asia), Wargal Saraswathi Temple, Singur Dam, Edupayala Temple, Nelakondapalli, etc. Most of the places can be covered in 1-2 days and hence Medak acts a perfect weekend getaway from Hyderabad.

Medak is hardly 2 hours drive from Hyderabad and it is a good weekend destination. It is well connected by Road and also connected by train with Wadiaram which is 26 kms away.

Historical & Heritage | Pilgrimage

At a distance of 1.5 kms from Medak Bus Station and 96 kms from Hyderabad, Medak Cathedral is the largest church in entire Asia and second largest in the world after Vatican.

The Cathedral built in Gothic style was inaugurated in 1914 and completed in 1924. The main tower of the church is 175 feet high and the cathedral can accommodate 5000 people at a time. There are 3 magnificent stained glass windows depicting the life of Jesus Christ. At a distance of 2.3 km from Medak Bus Station and 95 km from Hyderabad, The Medak Fort is situated in Medak town of Telanagana State. This is an ideal weekend getaway and an important historical site around Hyderabad.

The fort was built in the 12th century during the reign of the Kakatiyan ruler, Pratapa Rudra. The fort was originally known as Methuku durgam, which denotes cooked rice. The fort was the command post for the rulers of Kakatiyas and also for the Qutub Shahis who ruled the area.

At a distance of 5 km from Pocharam village, 16 km from Medak and 109 km from Hyderabad, Pocharam Dam & Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Medak district of Telangana. This is an ideal tourist place to visit from Hyderabad and spend few hours.

Pocharam Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 130 sq km. It was a former hunting ground of the Nizams of Hyderabad. Established in the year 1952, the sanctuary gets its name from the Pocharam Lake formed after the construction of Pocharam Dam on Alair river, a tributary of Manjira River.

Built in 12th century, Edupayalu temple is one of the most famous and powerful temple in Telangana. River Manjeera flows as seven streams and they confluence at this place. Lake & Backwaters

At a distance of 63 km from Medak, 37 km from Sangareddy and 92 km from Hyderabad, The Singur or Singoor dam is located near Sangareddy town of Medak district in Telangana. This is one of the scenic tourist places to visit near Hyderabad.

Constructed across the river Manjeera, the dam provides drinking water to Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Construction of the Singur dam was started in 1979 and completed in 1989.
