Sri Krishna Temple - Ambalapuzha - History, Timings & Entry Fee

At a distance of 14 km from Alappuzha Railway Station, Sri Krishna Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Ambalapuzha. It is one of the popular places of pilgrimage in Kerala, and among the best places to visit as part of Alleppey packages.

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple is believed to have been built during the 15th century AD by the local ruler Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran.It is one of the seven greatest Vaishnava temples in Travancore, and among the major Alleppey places to visit.

Built-in typical Kerala style of temple architecture, this temple is famous for Pala Payasam (sweet pudding made of rice and milk) served to the devotees. The idol at Ambalapuzha is likened to the Parthasarthi form of Vishnu, holding a whip in his right hand and a conch in his left. During the raids of Tipu Sultan in 1789, the idol of Sri Krishna from the Guruvayoor Temple was brought to the Ambalappuzha Temple for safekeeping for 12 years.

Amabalapuzha Temple Festival, known as the Champakkulam Moolam Water Festival is celebrated in remembrance of the installation of the idol of Lord Krishna in the temple. Several pilgrims and tourists flock to this place and take blessings from Lord Krishna. The Aaraattu festival is also celebrated here which starts in the months of March and April. This festival commences with the flag hoisting ceremony on the Atham day in Malaylam month 'Meenam' (March-April) and ends on 'Thiruvonam' day in Meenam. Another festival like Pallipana is also celebrated here once in every 12 years.

The temple follows a traditional dress code. As per rules, it is customary for male visitors to remove their shirts and vests before entering the temple. The women visitors are expected to dress in conventional clothes such as a saree or a suit. Otherwise, the entry is restricted.
