About Doddabetta Peak

At a distance of 9 km from Ooty, Doddabetta is a mountain peak situated on the Ooty - Kotagiri Road in the Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu. Literally means Big Mountain, Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiri Mountains and one of the popular places to visit in Ooty.

Situated at an altitude of 2623 m at the junction of the Western and Eastern Ghats, Doddabetta is regarded as one of the highest peaks in South India. The area surrounding Doddabetta is mostly forested. Sholas cover the hollows of its slopes. Tall rhododendron trees, flowering sub-alpine shrubs, and herbs are common, even very near the peak. One can have a magnificent panoramic view of the landscape, beautiful valley, plains of Coimbatore, and the flat highlands of Mysore from the peak as part of your Ooty trip.

Telescope House at Doddabetta Peak

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation manages a Telescope House in Doddabetta Peak which enables visitors to get a better view. From the Telescope House, one can view the entire Nilgiri mountains, dense forests that are also home to endangered species of flora and fauna, and low-lying plains. Visitors can also get some stunning views of Chamundi Hills from this astonishing peak on a clear day.

Trekking to Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta is one of the prominent places for trekking in Ooty. The trail is about 2 km that passes through rugged paths and grassy slopes that are covered with ferns and alpines. The ascend offers striking views of the colorful rhododendrons sprinkled over the lush scenery. You can also watch many birds as the area around the peak is a reserved forest and is home to many endangered species of flora and fauna. On the top of the peak, there is a Telescope House, and a TTDC restaurant, which caters to the taste of the visitors.

Best Time to Visit Doddabetta Peak

The pleasant weather of Ooty makes it favorable to visit all through the year, however, the best time to visit Doddabetta is from October to January. Early morning is the best time to visit to avoid the crowd and the frequent afternoon mist.

How to Reach Doddabetta Peak

Dodabetta Peak is located at a distance of 9 km from Ooty Bus Stand and can be accessed via bus as well as a car. There are frequent bus services to Doddabetta Peak from Ooty to the main gate. From there one can take the pathway to reach the peak.
