Each state in India hosts a multitude of caves, hidden within forests and valleys, akin to buried treasures in this vast nation, which remain predominantly unexplored and mysterious. These caves are regarded as some of the most important heritage sites in India. Maharashtra serves as a repository of ancient rock-cut architecture, featuring UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Ajanta and Ellora, in addition to tranquil locations like Elephanta, Karla, and Bhaja. These caves, primarily located in the Sahyadri hills, provide an in-depth exploration of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain history dating back to 200 BC, showcasing intricate carvings, grand chaityas, and ancient stupas. However, visiting all these caves is impractical, so we have curated a list of iconic caves that are vital to include in Maharashtra tour packages.

Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves, a prime example of remarkable cave architecture in India, comprise a collection of 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to 650 CE. Historian Walter M. Spink notes that the construction of the Ajanta caves occurred in two distinct phases. The initial phase, which took place during the Satavahana dynasty, saw the creation of Caves 9, 10, 12, 13, and 15A, which are associated with the Hinayana sect of Buddhism. The subsequent phase of construction was undertaken during the reign of Emperor Harisena of the Vakataka dynasty. These rock-cut caves embody both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist traditions, featuring stunning paintings that illustrate the rebirths of Buddha along with numerous Jataka Tales.
