At a distance of 3 km from Srinagar Bus Station, Shri Pratap Singh Museum, commonly known as SPS Museum, is a heritage museum located in Srinagar. Situated in Lal Mandi, it is one of the best museums in Kashmir and among the must-visit places as part of Srinagar tour packages.

Shri Pratap Singh Museum provides an insight into the history and traditions of Kashmir. In 1889, a proposal for the foundation of an archaeology museum in the Indian city of Srinagar was formulated by Amar Singh and S.H. Godmerry. The pair produced and submitted a memorandum to Pratap Singh, the then ruler of Srinagar. The Maharaja accepted the proposal and agreed to allow for the establishment of the museum. The museum was set up in a state building in Srinagar under the supervision of Sir John Marshal from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Later, the museum was opened to the public in 1898. Later in 2017, the Government decided to raise a new modern building to house the museum in line with modern techniques and exhibitions.

During its initial days, the museum housed artifacts like shawls and armory from Tosh Khana. When the archaeological department was reorganized, excavated exhibits from different parts of Kashmir were preserved here. Now, the museum houses a collection of over 80,000 artifacts in various sections. Starting with the Archaeological Section, visitors get a chance to know about the beginning of human civilization in the valley. The Numismatics and Manuscripts section displays precious coins and texts that tell about the economic and literary development of the region. Weapons of warfare used during battles against various kingdoms are preserved here with care.

Decorative items made of willow wood, paper mache, ceramic, and glass are kept on display in one of the galleries of this museum. The fabulous collection also includes exquisite enameled metalware used in old times. Famous pashmina and shahtoosh shawls are kept in the Textile Section. The Miniature Painting Gallery of this museum houses beautiful mural artworks and delicate naqashi work. Musical instruments played in the region can be seen in the related section of this heritage museum.
