At a distance of 43 km from Bijapur, Basaveshwara Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the town of Basavana Bagewadi, Karnataka. It is one of the most prominent places to visit as part of the Bijapur pilgrimage packages.

Basaveshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was constructed in the 11th century by the Kalyani Chalukyas. While it primarily serves as a Shiva temple, special emphasis is placed on Nandi, the divine vehicle of Lord Shiva, as Basavanna is regarded as an incarnation of Nandi. A stone archway provides access to the temple, which is encircled by colonial-era buildings that accommodate a school.

The temple exemplifies the distinctive Kalyani Chalukya architectural style, featuring a grand vimana. It is oriented to the east and includes a sanctum sanctorum, an open vestibule, a natyamantapa, a sabhamantapa, and a nandimantapa. The main structure is constructed from sandstone, while the nandimantapa appears to be a later addition made of granite. Within the sanctum sanctorum lies a small shivalinga, framed by an intricately decorated doorway adorned with multiple door jambs. The ceiling of the natyamantapa showcases a depiction of a dancing Shiva, surrounded by the ashtadikpalakas.

In this temple, Nandi is revered as a deity, distinguishing it from other Shiva temples, and is thus referred to as Moola Nandishwara. The Nandi idol is significantly larger than the shivalinga in the sanctum sanctorum and is exquisitely carved, embellished with vibrant clothing and jewelry. Over the years, the temple has undergone modifications, including the installation of a marble sculpture of Basavanna in the sabhamantapa. The temple grounds are well-maintained and feature Basavanna's vachanas displayed on boards. The Kudala Sangama Development Board is responsible for the temple's upkeep.

The town of Basavana Bagewadi is renowned as the birthplace of the 12th-century saint, poet, and social reformer Basavanna, also referred to as Basaveshwara. He is believed to have founded the Lingayat sect, which is devoted to Shiva worship.Basava was born in Basavana Bagewadi in the year 1131 CE to Madiraja and Madalambike. The original residence in Basavana Bagewadi where he spent his formative years has been replaced by a contemporary edifice known as Basava Smarak. This site features reliefs that illustrate significant events from Basavanna's life. Prominently displayed are three life-size statues of Guru Jatavedamuni, Madalambike with the infant Basava, and Madiraja, capturing the moment when Guru Jatavedamuni revives the still-born child.
