At a distance of 9 km from Ella Railway Station, Ella Rock is a dramatic peak situated near Ella in Sri Lanka. It is one of the best hiking and trekking sites in Sri Lanka and among the must-do things in Ella.

Ella, a quaint little town ringed by verdant mountains has become a sensation among travelers. Amidst its many a delight, the trail to the top of Ella Rock is a bucket-list item of many who visit Ella. Though it is known as a quite challenging hike, the view from the top of the rock was thrilling. One can see the Little Adam's Peak in front, the petite village at the bottom and enormous ranges all around.

Hiking to Ella Rock is considered to be one of the biggest accomplishments for hikers and trekkers. While the views from the top of Ella Rock are breathtaking, it takes about more than 4 hours to trek up and down. The track up the peak is averagely strenuous and has quite a few interesting things to see. Walking through the beautiful path, the train track, bridge and the tea plantation on the way up is a wholesome experience.

One may start trekking from Ella Railway Station, Kithal Ella Railway Station or Heel Oya Railway Track. Kithal Ella being the closest to the rock. After 5-10 minutes from Kithal Ella station, there will be a 2nd left turn and takes this one and cross the bridge over the river. After that, one will see two paths, of which you have to take the left one as it leads to the top. Walking ahead on this path, visitors will see tea plantation and then a field of long grass that you have to cross. Once you pass the long grass, turn right and walk till you reach an interim viewing point. From here, all you have to do is walk straight to reach the top of the Ella rock. The way down was obviously a lot easier and you can't really go wrong with which path you take.

The best time for trekking is from December to March as it is the driest period. It is advised to start the hike in the morning to avoid the wrath of the scorching sun.
