Protected by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), the Abu Dhabi Mangrove National Park covers over 19 sq. km of protected coastal mangrove forests. The park comprises of a whopping 75% of the total mangrove forested area in the United Arab Emirates and is a biodiversity hotspot that includes mangrove forests, salt marshes, mudflats, and algal communities. Most often found growing in the sea waters of tropical and sub-tropical coastal areas, the indigenous trees of the mangroves act as a natural windbreak, protecting the region against tidal surges, purify the surrounding water and provide a healthy eco-system for the animals and marine creatures that call it home.

Filled with a variety of flora and fauna, the park is a real haven for nature lovers as well as adventure enthusiasts. The Mangrove National Park is home to a wide variety of different aquatic inhabitants, including crabs, herons, flamingos, and fish. More than 60 bird species can be spotted here, including the greater flamingo and western reef heron. Both are easiest seen in the breeding season from April to July. The park also provides a habitat for turtles, foraging foxes and marine mammals such as the dugong and dolphin.

To experience the mangroves close up, you can head out by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or boat using one of the operators stationed at the Marina on the Eastern Mangrove Promenade. Kayaking is a fun and enjoyable activity, even for those with no experience. It is easy to learn, and instructions are provided by the accompanying experienced guides. The 2 hour Eco Tour allows visitors to understand the important ecology of mangroves, as well as explore these beautiful last remnants of the city's forests along with its diverse terrestrial and marine life.

Another interesting thing to do for a really special experience is to sign up for a night tour and discover the mangroves by gliding through the waters after dark. Seahawk Water Sports, Noukhada, Hydro Marine Sports, Al Mahara Diving, Belevari, and Safwa Marine are the accredited tour operators.
