Science Center Surat, Surat - Timings, Entry Fee, History & Artifacts

At a distance of 8 km from Surat Railway Station, Science Center is a multi-facility complex situated in the City Light area of Surat, Gujarat. popularly called as Surat Science Center, it is one of the must-include places in the Surat family packages.

The Science Centre in Surat was established by the Surat Municipal Corporation in 2009, marking it as the first of its kind in western India. The complex spans a total area of 21,800 square meters and was constructed at a cost of INR 50.24 crores. Within the complex, one can find a Science Centre, Sardar Patel Museum, an Art Gallery, an Auditorium, an Amphitheatre, and a Planetarium. The design was executed by the Ahmedabad-based architectural firm, HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd.

The Science Centre serves as the focal point of the complex, providing an engaging exploration of scientific wonders. It features thematic galleries that cover a diverse range of subjects, such as Space, Cosmos, Polar regions, Textiles, and Diamonds. A standout attraction is the 'Fun Science Gallery,' which boasts over 50 interactive exhibits that make scientific concepts accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages. From hands-on experiments to educational displays, there is something for everyone to appreciate and learn from.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum houses approximately 8,400 artifacts across various categories, including wood, porcelain, copper, bronze, textiles, coins, paintings, miniature paintings, manuscripts, and sculptures. This museum was created to highlight the historical significance of Surat. Additionally, it features a small auditorium for screening documentaries related to Surat's history. Directly across from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum, the art gallery serves as a haven for art enthusiasts, showcasing masterpieces from both established and emerging artists.

The Science Centre also includes a planetarium located on the first floor, designed in the shape of a sphere with a diameter of 16.30 meters. The planetarium's digital theatre allows for the observation of stars, the moon, planets, and other celestial bodies projected onto a full dome. It employs high-resolution projectors utilizing Digistar 3 technology along with a digital audio system. Currently, the shows are available in three languages: Hindi, Gujarati, and English.

The cutting-edge 3D Amphitheatre offers an immersive experience that transports visitors into an alternate dimension. The Auditorium is housed in the mezzanine level of the Complex at the southern end of the main building. It has a seating capacity of 260, and is used for seminars, lectures and meetings.
