Sarjekot Fort, Malvan / Sindhudurg - Timings, History, Architecture, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 5 Km from Malvan Bus Stand, the Sarjekot Fort is an old military fortification situated on the coast of Arabian Sea in Malvan, Maharashtra. It is one of the historical forts on the Konkan coast, and among the must-include places in the Malvan sightseeing packages.

Situated to the north of Sindhudurg Fort, Sarjekot Fort serves as a remarkable site for both enthusiasts of history and admirers of nature. Constructed by Shivaji Maharaj in 1668 at the mouth of Kalaval Creek, this fort is part of a collection of forts established in and around Malvan during the 16th to 18th centuries. Positioned at the mouth of Talashil Estuary, Sarjekot features naturally safe inland anchorages, which provided refuge for many of Shivaji's ships during the stormy season.

The fort is approximately square in shape and spans an area of around 2 acres. Originally, it comprised ten bastions and a single rampart. The entrance is a small archway adorned with exquisite carvings. The fort's walls facing the Arabian Sea remain in good condition, while the other walls show signs of deterioration. Historical records indicate that the fort once had a moat that was 10 feet wide and 10 feet deep on three sides; however, only the moat outside the citadel walls is currently visible.

Within the fort, one can find a well, a Tulsi Vrindavan, and the remnants of a house foundation. A staircase leads to the ramparts, enabling visitors to traverse the walls and ascend the tall, sturdy structures of the fort. The view of the sunset from this location is truly stunning, making it a popular destination for tourists.
