At a distance of 7 km from Jabalpur Junction, Balancing Rock is a naturally occurring geological formation in Jabalpur. Situated on the way to Madan Mahal Fort, it is one of the interesting places to visit during your Jabalpur trip.

Also called Precarious Boulder, Balancing Rock is a miraculous wonder of nature located at the base of Madan Mahal Fort. It is actually an offshoot of eroded volcanic rock. One rock is balanced on a huge base rock and only touches it slightly. The point of contact between the two rocks is only 6 sq inches. These are balanced in a way that no external force can disturb this balance may it be wind, storm, rain or earthquake, or mechanical force. In fact, this huge independent rock has sustained the impact of an earthquake in 1997 that measured as high as 6.5 on the Richter Scale.

The unusual topography at the site has made it a popular attraction among locals and tourists. Besides, the archaeologists and geologists fail to sight the exact reason stating how these rocks could stay unmoved for so many years and they assume that it might be their weight and positioning along with the gravitational pull that has allowed these rocks to even withstand an earthquake. Besides, the area is surrounded by picturesque hillocks and makes for a great natural retreat for visitors.
