At a distance of 8 km from Rameswaram Railway Station, Villoondi Theertham is a sacred spot in Rameswaram. It is one of the 64 Theerthas (sacred water bodies) situated in Rameswaram.

Villoondi Theertham is renowned for its freshwater spring that emerges within the sea. The name 'Villoondi,' meaning 'buried bow,' is derived from the belief that this is the location where Lord Rama buried his bow and arrow. A platform extends into the sea, leading to the sacred well, where the water is remarkably sweet and pure, despite the surrounding saltwater. Devotees come here and take a sip of the holy water.

The origin of this spring is linked to a mythological tale from the Hindu epic Ramayana. After rescuing Goddess Sita and returning to Rameswaram from Sri Lanka, Lord Rama conducted rituals by establishing a Shiva lingam at the site. When Sita expressed her thirst, Rama shot an arrow into the sea, resulting in the emergence of a spring that provided pure water.

This location offers breathtaking and dramatic vistas of the sea. In addition to the stunning scenery, there is a small shrine dedicated to Shiva, known as Thrayambakeshvarar, which is also worth visiting. Villoondi Theertham beach is a tranquil area characterized by gentle tides.
