Badal Mahal Gate - History, Timings & Entry Fee

At a distance of 1.5 km from Chanderi Bus Station, Badal Mahal is an ancient structure situated in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. Situated at the southern end of the inner city, it is one of the most eminent among all monuments in Chanderi that one must visit as part of Chanderi packages.

Situated near the Jama Masjid, Badal Mahal Darwaza or Badal Mahal Gate was constructed by Sultan Mehmood Shah Khilji, the King of Malwa, in the 15th century to commemorate his victory in one of his many military campaigns. It is basically a singular structure of a gate that doesn't lead to any palace or mahal. This gate served the purpose of welcoming and grandly honouring the state guests.

The Badal Mahal complex is enclosed by an old fort-like structure towards the front and sides. A straight paved path flanked by beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns from the entrance lead to the tall and imposing Badal Mahal. They remind you of the Mughal gardens that one sees at the Taj Mahal and other Mughal monuments including the likes of Qutub Minar and other historical monuments of Delhi. The image of this stunning gate is used in Postal Stamps and also on handloom sarees made in the small town.

This imposing gate has a height of 100 feet, and bears intricate designs and netted windows that portray inferences of Mughal architecture. The upper portion of the gate shows four beautifully carved windows, each with a different design motif. On the other side of the gate is a hanging balcony where the musicians used to sit to entertain guests. This balcony was also used to shower flower petals on the guests as they passed under. At best, Badal Mahal is a facade, which looks stunning against the backdrop of a hill and the Kirti Durg Fort.

Archaeologists have also discovered a hidden underground palace in this compound. The foundation and courtyard-like rooms can be clearly seen after careful excavation. This new discovery will certainly intrigue all architects and history aficionados.
