At a distance of 3 km from Chanderi Bus Station, Kati Ghati is an impressive gateway located in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. Situated to the South of Chanderi, it is one of the best places for sightseeing in Chanderi.

The Kati Ghati Gateway is a massive passage carved out of an entire rock that forms the link between Malwa and Bundelkhand. Situated at an altitude of 230 feet, the gate is about 80 feet high and has a width of 39 feet. There is an inscription in two scripts, one being Devnagari, so we know that the gateway was commissioned by one Jiman Khan who was the son of Sher Khan, Governor of Chanderi, in 1495 AD.

There is an interesting legend associated with the Gateway. It is said that the gateway was to be built to welcome the Sultan of Malwa who planned to visit Chanderi and impress him. Jiman Khan was searching for someone who could build the gate. There were no takers for what looked like an impossible task, and just when Jiman Khan was about to lose hope, there arrived a man who was ready to take up the task. One fine day the task was completed and Jiman Khan was called to inspect the work. The joy of Jiman Khan on seeing the massive gateway was short-lived as he realized that there was no door in the gateway and now it exposed Chanderi to enemies and in fact, had created an easy pathway for them to enter the kingdom. The man who had achieved the almost impossible task was stunned when he realized his folly. The mason was so dejected that he committed suicide. His mortal remains were interred right next to the gateway.
