Chettinad Palace, Chettinadu - Timings, History, Architecture, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 2 Km from Chettinadu Railway Station, Chettinad Palace, also known as Kanadukathan Palace,is an ancient mansion located in the Kanadukathan, village in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the must-include places in Chettinad tour packages.

The Chettinad Palace was constructed in 1912 by Dr. Raja Annamalai Chettiyar, who was the founder of the Indian Bank and Annamalai University. The construction of the palace was overseen by Dr. Annamalai Chettiar and took a total of seven years to finish. There can be no better way to experience the rich culture and history of the Chettiyars than to visit the palace. It is one of the must-visit tourist places in Chettinad.

Chettinadu Mansion showcases a fusion of European and local Chettinad architectural styles, distinguished by elaborate carvings, vibrant details, and expansive courtyards. The palace is constructed using premium Italian marble, Burma teak, Belgian stained glass, and a combination of colors along with ornate wrought iron and woodwork, featuring handmade Athangudi tiles renowned worldwide for their diverse colors and geometric designs.

More than just a historical site, this palace serves as a repository of invaluable antiques that were once utilized by the Raja. Among the most fascinating artifacts within the palace grounds is a photograph of the Raja, elegantly framed between two grand elephant tusks. The magnificence of the Chettinad Palace is further accentuated by the extensive stretches of lush greenery that envelop it. Nestled within a meticulously maintained garden area, the palace is truly a feast for the eyes.

Although it was previously a prominent tourist destination, access to the palace is now limited, and visitors may need to obtain prior permission to enter the Kanadukathan Chettinad Palace. Currently, the palace is owned by Sri MAM Ramaswamy and his family.
