At a distance of 33 Kms from Mangalore, 50 Kms from Udupi & 17 kms from Karkala, Moodabidri, popularly known as Jain Kashi, is one of the major centers of Jainism in South India. It's located between Mangalore & Karkala.

Moodabidri has 18 Jain basadis, the most famous being the 1000 Pillared Temple dedicated to Chandranatha. The temple is also known as Savirakambha Basadi & Hosa Basadi. The uniqueness of this temple is that no two pillars are identical. This temple was built in 1430 AD under the ruler Devaraja Wodeyar of Nagamangala. The temple has a valuable collection of metal, jewel carved images of Jain tirthankars. The 2 meter high panchaloha image of Chandranatha is a special attraction. A 15 meter tall single stone pillar called Manastambha stands in front of the Basadi.

The 17th century Chowta Palace is also worth visiting for its beautifully carved wooden pillars & ceilings.
