4 New UNESCO World Heritage Sites of India

India is a vast and diverse country with a history dating back to 5000 years. Recently 4 new Indian sites have been added to the list during the 42-44th sessions of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee bringing the number of world heritage sites in India to 40.

Here is the list of recently added UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.

Rudreswara (Ramappa) Temple, Telangana

Ramappa Temple is an ancient temple situated at Palampet village in the Warangal district of Telangana. Also known as Ramalingeswara Temple or Rudreshwara Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built during the period of Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva. It is one of the top heritage sites in Telangana, and among the must-include places in Warangal tour packages. Known for its splendid architecture & intricate carvings, the temple has been on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Site under ‘The Glorious Kakatiya Temples and Gateways’, since 2014. And, it has been conferred with a World Heritage Site status on 25th July 2021, making it the 39th World Heritage Site of India. Stands as a testimony of the royal Kakatiyas, this amazing piece of art draws thousands of tourists all throughout the year.

Dholavira-A Harrapan City

Situated at Khadir Bet in the Kutch district of Gujarat, Dholavira is the larger of the two most remarkable excavations of the Indus Valley Civilization, the other being Rakhigarhi, and one of the top historical places to visit near Ahmedabad. This Harappan-era city received the UNESCO world heritage site tag on 27th July 2021. It became the fourth UNESCO site from Gujarat and 40th from India to make the list. Found in 1967 and excavated in 1989-90 for the first time, the ancient city of Dholavira is one of the most remarkable and well-preserved urban settlements in South Asia dating from the 3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE. Managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, this ancient site is known for its unique characteristics, such as its water management system, multi-layered defensive mechanisms, extensive use of stone in construction, and special burial structures. It is one of the prominent places to visit in Gujarat and among the must-include places in Kutch tour packages.

Victorian Gothic & Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai

The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Bombay is a collection of 19th century Victorian neo-Gothic public buildings and 20th century Art Deco buildings in the Fort area of Mumbai, among the must-visit places as part of Maharashtra tour packages. Declared as UNESCO World Heritage sites on 30th June 2018 during the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee at Manama, Bahrain, this site is a collection of 94 buildings that include Bombay High Court, Rajabai Clock Tower, Eros Cinema and Convocation Hall, University of Mumbai, Watson’s Hotel, David Sassoon Library, and the Elphinstone College. The Pink City – Jaipur
