At a distance of 3.5 km from Dehradun Railway Station, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology is an autonomous research institute of the Department of Science and Technology situated in Dehradun.

Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology was established in the year 1968 by Government of India. This Institute mainly focuses on Earth Sciences like Glaciology, Earthquakes, Landslides, Natural Resources and Geodynamics. Formerly known as the Institute of Himalayan Geology, it was renamed in 1976 as Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in honor of the late Prof. D.N. Wadia who founded this research organization.

The institute carries out basic research in Himalayan Geology along with several related fields, which include mountain building processes, seismotectonics, geodynamic evolution and natural resources. The institute also has field search stations at Naddi-Dharamsala, Dokriani Bamak Glacier Station at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh.

The research center also houses a massive library boasting of a collection of over 20,000 books apart from research journals. Moreover, the museum within the complex exhibits geological maps, charts, samples and models along with video films on Himalayan and general geology to educate the students and general visitors.
