About Cauvery Nisargadhama


At a distance of 3 km from Kushalnagar, 7 km from Bylakuppe, 12 km from Dubare Elephant Camp, and 29 km from Madikeri, Cauvery Nisargadhama is an island formed by the River Cauvery in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. It is one of the most scenic Coorg tourist places and also a famous picnic spot for the people of Coorg.

This island was developed as a tourist spot in 1988 by the Forest Department. Spread over a sprawling 64-acre land, the island is filled with thick bamboo groves, sandalwood, and teak trees. The island is accessible through a hanging rope bridge. This island also features a deer park, Rabbit Park, Peacock Park, and Orchidarium. The Island is perfect for a picnic with the children. It is also an ideal destination for those who love nature and spend time by themselves. It is a very good site for seeing parakeets, bee-eaters and woodpeckers, and a variety of butterflies.

Things to do at Kaveri Nisargadhama


Elephant rides and boating in the Kaveri river are the major attractions here. Tourists are also allowed to get into the water at a few safe points along the river. People can also look at the rabbits at the lovely Rabbit Park, the elegant deers at the Deer Park, and the Peacocks at the popular Peacock Park.

There are treetop bamboo cottages and forest department guest houses for accommodation. With River Kaveri flowing by its sides and surrounded by the refreshing greenery of the forest, these cottages create an ideal accommodation for everyone. The tariff for cottages ranges from Rs.700 to Rs.1000 per night.

Best Time to Visit Kaveri Nisargadhama


October to April is the best time to visit this island when the lush greenery of the forest and the resulting coolness of the atmosphere makes it ideal to visit. During winter months, the temperature drops to a considerable degree, making the forest quite cold to stay in. The monsoon season sees moderate to heavy rainfall and hence very less number of tourists visit the area. However, the ambiance is wonderful with fresh air and greenery all around.

How to Reach Cauvery Nisargadhama


Kaveri Nisargadhama is about 29 km from Madikeri, and 3 km from Kushalanagara, the nearby connecting junction off the Mysore-Madikeri Highway. Almost all the buses that go to Madikeri from Kushalnagar, stop at the highway near the forest. From the bus stand, it takes around 15 minutes for tourists to reach Cauvery Nisargadhama Forest Park. Tourists can also hire a taxi and travel directly to Kaveri Nisargadhama Forest Park from Madikeri or Mysore.
