At a distance of 11 Km from Kushalnagara, and 34 Km from Madikeri, the Harangi Elephant Camp is a new elephant camp located near the scenic Harangi Reservoir in Kushalanagar taluk of Kodagu district. It is one of the most serene and lesser-known wildlife attractions in Karnataka, and among the must-include places in the Coorg Wildife Packages.

The Harangi Elephant Camp was inaugurated on August 8, 2022, in Harangi as part of Karnataka's efforts to conserve its forests. This facility is situated on 40 acres of the Athur Reserve Forest, located in the backwater region adjacent to the tree park on the right side of the Harangi reservoir. The Athur Range Forest spans approximately 2,000 acres, providing an ideal habitat for elephants with abundant water and lush greenery. The eight jumbo camps house more than 100 tamed elephants that are used to rescue wild animals and for logging purposes at Government timber depots. In the initial phase, these elephants have been relocated to Harangi, with plans for additional transfers in the future, thereby alleviating the burden on the Dubare Camp.

The Harangi Elephant Camp plays a vital role in the care, training, and nurturing of elephants. It shelters numerous rescued and rehabilitated elephants, offering visitors the opportunity to observe daily activities such as feeding, bathing, and gentle training sessions. These sessions are led by skilled mahouts who have a long-standing relationship with the elephants, making their interactions a captivating experience for onlookers.

What distinguishes Harangi from other elephant camps is its serene environment. The camp is enveloped by thick forests and the calming riverbanks of Harangi. The leisurely pace of life here allows visitors to appreciate the tranquil presence of the elephants, listen to the forest's sounds, and enjoy a refreshing respite from urban life. It serves as a peaceful retreat that fosters a respectful and meaningful connection between people and wildlife.

The establishment of this camp has also enhanced the Harangi Dam area. Tourists can enjoy pedal boating & Jet Ski in the backwaters of Harangi, and a viewpoint has been created for sunset viewing, complete with benches for visitors to relax.
