Recognized as a 'Jain Kashi,' the town thrived under the Pandya Bhairarasa Wodeyars, a branch of the Santara dynasty, who constructed various monuments including the Gommateshwara statue (Bahubali) in 1432 AD and the Chaturmukha Basadi from the 16th century. Following the Pandyas' reign, the territory was taken over by Tippu Sultan and subsequently came under British control.
