The reservoir occupies a total area of around 30 sq km. This is one of the popular tourist places to visit near Hyderabad.

It was built in 1920 to provide drinking water source for Hyderabad, and also saving the city from floods. It is named after Osman Ali Khan, The Last Nizam of Hyderabad. The road over the reservoir gates offer good views and cool breeze.

There are a couple of parks attached to the lake, one at the entrance and the other one close to the reservoir road. Though no official boating facilities are available in the lake as this is used for drinking water purpose, small private boats and coracles do operate in the peak monsoons near the northern end of the park.

The post monsoon season is the best time to visit. Admission to the lake is free.
